JASC Rings in the New Year!!

2024 has been our most successful year to date! And we intend to top that in 2025! Everyone’s December calendars are all booked, so we have scheduled our annual holiday party in January. Please join us as we start 2025 with an afternoon of socializing, eating and celebrating, in the Hudson Valley. We will gather at East Mountain Preserve in Dover Plains, NY on Saturday, January 11, 2025 at noon and stay until approximately 4:00 PM.

We will have the main lodge at the preserve all to ourselves, where the wood stove will be burning as we enjoy a hot buffet, bar and beautiful views. East Mountain is a family-owned hunting preserve (there will not be any hunting or shooting the day of our party) located 85 miles above Manhattan, and about 10 minutes past Ten Mile River Preserve. You are welcome to bring adult friends, including significant others, and friends who want to check out the Julianas, as long as you pay for each person. Dress is casual, and jeans are just fine.

Cost: $20 per person which covers great company, food, beverages, and beautiful views!!

This event is reserved for JASC members and their guests.

to Apr 27

Linda Hotchkiss Annual Fly Fishing School & Warm-up Weekend for Women: April 24 - 27, 2025 at Ten Mile River Preserve, Dover Plains, NY

There are many good programs out there to choose from, but in our (not so) humble opinion, we have an edge. How?

All Women: Our instructors are women, as well as our students. As a result, our students are able to learn in a safe and comfortable environment.

  • All Inclusive: You won’t have to find a place to sleep or a restaurant to eat. Everything is covered in your tuition, and our program is at one location.

  • All Levels: Designed to teach fly fishing to women who have never held a fly rod, as well as hone the skills of advanced anglers looking to shake off the winter cobwebs and improve their technique.

  • All Fun, All (well maybe most) of the Time!!

Never Evers & Beginners will start in the classroom to cover the basics of fly fishing before heading out to the lawn for casting instruction. Once students grasp the concept, they will have the opportunity to put those new skills to work by fishing along the 3.5 miles of private water on the Ten Mile River.

Intermediate & Advanced anglers will spend most of their time on the water for more advanced instruction, including reading the water, selecting the appropriate fly, improving casting skills, and learning new techniques.

The all-inclusive weekend includes:

  • Instruction by JASC Board Members and longtime anglers who are as happy to be there as you are. Your instructors will gladly share their knowledge and experience in order to give you the skills and confidence you need to get out on the water and fly fish.

  • Classroom sessions to learn about basic gear, essential knots, stream entomology, and fly selection.

  • Small group and individualized casting instruction.

  • On-water instruction to gain practical experience, including safe wading; casting; fly presentation; hooking, landing, and safely releasing the fish.

  • Advanced anglers will focus on mastering their techniques and developing new skills.

  • Meals start with dinner on Thursday and conclude with breakfast on Sunday. Adult beverages are available for purchase at our off-site dinner on Thursday. Wine and beer are included with your dinners on Friday and Saturday.

  • Lodging will be on-site at Ten Mile River Preserve in Dover Plains, NY. Anglers will share double rooms with private baths in the club’s main lodge.

$890.00

We are limited only by our boundless enthusiasm and the number of beds available. Registration is on a first come, first served basis. All rooms are double occupancy with en suite bathrooms. If you wish to specify a roommate, please indicate this on your registration form. Also please indicate any special dietary needs - we will make every effort to accommodate.

The Julianas take on the Tributaries of Lake Ontario in search of Steelhead & Browns!

to Dec 15

The Julianas take on the Tributaries of Lake Ontario in search of Steelhead & Browns!

The Julianas will zip our jackets and put on our warm hats as we head north to the tributaries of Lake Ontario in search of the legendary Steelhead and large Brown Trout. We will enjoy two days of guided fishing at Oak Orchard and Sandy Creeks on Friday (12/13) and Saturday (12/14). Our lead guide, Aaron Deruyter, has been guiding this area of Lake Ontario tributaries for the last 10 years. He specializes in streamer fishing and sarcasm, with a focus on wild and native fish in the glacial cut gullies as well as lake run species.

This trip is for four experienced anglers willing to brave the December cold and reap the rewards of huge fish afforded the worthy. So pack your warmest long johns, wool socks, and puffer jackets for a weekend in search of monsters on the fly!

We will begin our adventure on Thursday, December 12, 2024. Our lodging in Brockport, NY is approximately 6 hours from Manhattan. Carpooling is encouraged. We will arrive for a cozy evening where a warm, home-cooked meal will be waiting. Afterwards, we will sit together, review the weekend plans, and lie to each other about our fishing successes. We will have a hardy breakfast Friday and Saturday mornings to brace us for the cold water before gearing up and heading out to meet our guides. We will brown bag lunch both days. Hot coffee and tea will be available stream side. After great days on the river, we will head back to our weekend base for warm, home-cooked dinners. Our last evening will be spent reveling in the last two days of fantastic fishing. We will have a quick breakfast on Sunday morning before saying our goodbyes.

This is a wading trip. A NYS freshwater fishing license is required. The guides will have flies. Each angler will need all of her own gear including WARM (non-cotton) clothing for underneath the waders. Wading belts, wading staffs, warm hats and gloves are a must!

The angling will be primarily swinging wet flies. Suitable rods are 8-10 weight single-handed rods and 6-8 weight Spey rods. Salmon or steelhead leaders are optional, but tippets must be at least 10lb. Your trip leader will reach out to you with more specifics.

Trip cost: $859.00 per angler. This covers 3 nights of lodging, all meals from Thursday evening through Sunday morning, 2 days of guided fishing, and guide tips. Flies are included.

Day Trip on the Housatonic

Note: This trip is currently limited to 4 anglers. If the trip is full and you are interested in joining, please reach out to Laura Grose who may be able to secure additional guides.

The Housatonic River - It’s just like the Farmington except closer to home! And okay, maybe a little bit smaller, but you get the idea. The Julianas are heading to the Housy (as locals call it) in mid-November to target male Brown Trout at the end of the Fall spawn. We will once again join some of our favorite guides (photo includes the guide’s extraordinary sons who “co-guided” for us one day) from Connecticut for a full day wade trip.

Groups of two anglers will be paired up with one guide and will be provided with personal instruction, flies, leaders, tippet and rod set-ups. We will hit the river in the morning and fish until noon for a quick lunch stop. Anglers will pack their own brown-bag lunch. We will have a cooler with water, soft drinks and snacks. After lunch we will head back out to the river to fish through the afternoon.

Don’t let cooling temps stop you from getting your fish on! Fall is one of the best times to hit the river and we hope to see you on Saturday, November 23rd!!

Required: Connecticut fresh-water fishing license with a trout stamp, waders w/ wading belt, wading boots, wading staff, polarized sunglasses, a hat and bug spray. Anglers are welcome to bring their own 5- or 6-weight fly rod and matching reel and/or nymphing rig, fly line, leader & tippet. However, the guides will also provide all necessary rod/reel set-ups, flies, leaders and tippet.

Cost: $380 - includes one full day guided wade trip and guide gratuities.

Jersey Shore Fall Striper Run

to Nov 18

Jersey Shore Fall Striper Run

November at the Jersey Shore can produce big striper blitzes. From Late October-December striped bass migrate down the Eastern Seaboard. Massive schools of peanut bunker, adult bunker, mullet, spearing and sand eels are around. Join us for an un-guided day of beach fishing.

We will be fishing the falling tide and if the wind behaves we will fish the ocean side, which also means that having a solid double haul is essential. Bring your 7-, 8-, or 9-wt single hand or and a sealed reel loaded with intermediate line, and 16 or 20 1b tippet. If you have another reel with sinking line it is not a bad idea to have it in your arsenal. A stripping basket, waders, rain jacket, head lamp, hat, polarized glasses, and warm clothing will round out your kit.

Anglers will meet near Sandy Hook, NJ. Be prepared to walk over the Sandy Hook Bridge (approx. 12 min).
Recommended flies consist of clousers and deceivers, chartreuse is a popular color. Bring water, a packable lunch and snacks in your backpack. After fishing, anglers will choose to eat at a local restaurant or simply head home.

Required: Free Saltwater Registry. CLICK HERE to obtain it through the NJ Fish and Wildlife Site.

Cost: $15.00

Beginner Sporting Clay Instruction

In tandem with the Julianas who are shooting sporting clays today, brand new shooters will have the opportunity for instruction by Paula Moore, Chief Shooting Instructor for Orvis. Although the program will end at the conclusion of your lesson, we will have a table reserved for lunch in the restaurant. Lunch is not included in the event costs so that each of us may order off the menu. Please note that “brown bag lunches’ are not permitted in the restaurant.

We guarantee laughter and smiles as well as the usual camaraderie attendant with a JASC event.

Sporting Clays at Orvis Sandanona

Join us for a morning of Sporting Clays and Lunch at Orvis Sandanona in Millbrook, NY. The leaves along the course should be in peak colors and temperatures should be just right as well, not too warm and not too cool. Sporting Clays has been described as “Golf with a Shotgun” because participants travel from station to station where they take turns shooting clays with multiple presentations. The clays are basically clay frisbees that shatter (or even pulverize) in an incredibly satisfying manner.

BRAND NEW SHOOTERS must have instruction before heading out on the course. Please see our additional event posting to register for instruction.

Sandanona is about 90 minutes north of Manhattan up the Taconic Parkway. We will meet at a very civilized 9:30am for coffee, a safety briefing, collection of shotgun shells and general pre-shoot milling about before heading out to the course at 10:00am with our carts and trappers (ther person who launches the clays).

Although our program will end at the conclusion of Sporting Clays and instruction, we will have a table reserved for lunch in the restaurant. Lunch is not included in the event cost so that each of us can order off the menu. Please note that “brown bag lunches” are not permitted in the restaurant.

Post lunch, some will remain and enjoy the gorgeous grounds or take a short drive and stroll along the main drag in Millbrook. More experienced clay shooters may enjoy a second round of clays or head out to the fields to try to shoot a few partridge or pheasant.

We guarantee laughter and smiles as well as the usual camaraderie attendant with a JASC event.

Cost: $155 per participant covering shotgun rental, 100 shotgun shells, golf cart rental, trapper and tips. Note: Lunch is not included although a table will be reserved for us to eat together.

Weekend fishing trip on the Farmington River

Did someone say Pajama Party?!?!

Legends Lodge is located on the banks of the Farmington River, just over 2 hours from NYC, and only 10 minutes off I-84. We have booked the entire lodge for JASC!! This stretch of river has easy wading, allowing us to take advantage of some of the longest days of the year as we fish past sunset (don’t forget your headlamp!). The lodge has dedicated areas to hang wet waders and boots, a full kitchen, lounge area, double rooms with bath, and a nice selection of flies that are purchased on the honor system. Did we mention IT’S ALL OURS?!!

Anglers can check in on Friday at 2pm, and then head straight out to the river. We will have a casual dinner at the house before we hit the hay to prepare for Saturday’s guided fishing. On Saturday morning, we will eat breakfast in the lodge before meeting our guides. We will then split into groups so each guide can head to his/her preferred section of the river. Lunch will be on the river, and then we will fish until the day is done. Dinner will be back at the lodge. If you are up at sunrise, you can take advantage of a few more casts before we have to pack up and say good bye.

Included:
2 nights lodging, one full day of guided fishing, guide tips, full weekend access to the Farmington, and all meals from Friday dinner through Sunday breakfast.

Father's Day at Trout Camp

If you are not able to be with your dad on this Father’s Day, please consider joining us for a self-guided wading adventure on the Upper Delaware!!

Come out to Deposit, NY for the JASC Trout Camp! It’s prime time for dry fly fishing and we’ve got a comfortable house with a pavilion, fire pit and 150 feet of easy, wadeable riverfront access. That’s right! Just walk across the street and step in! Were staying in the special regs “no-kill” section, within a half mile of the Cannonsville dam release. No matter how hot the day may be, here the water stays quite cool and full of wily trout.

The house opens Thursday after 4pm. We’ll lay food out so you can drop your gear and recharge. Come relax around the fire or join us fishing right out front. Over the weekend, we’re going to visit the sweet public access spots (Game Lands, Indian Country, Laurel Bank, and more). Friday and Saturday are all about the fishing. Each day after breakfast, we’ll pack a lunch and fish until 3pm, when we break for an early dinner. By eating and recharging during this slow time, we’ll be ready for uninterrupted fishing through the evening hatch.

Equipment needed: New York State fresh-water fishing license, 5 weight rod/reel set-up, waders w/ belt, wading boots, wading staff, your favorite fishing pack, polarized glasses and a hat.

Day Trip to the Connetquot River, Long Island

Brookies, Rainbows and Browns, OH MY!!!

The wading is easy and the trout are plentiful. This day trip is a recommended follow-up to the Linda Hotchkiss Annual Fly Fishing School. Required:
New York State fresh-water fishing license, waders w/ belt, wading boots, wading staff, polarized sunglasses, hat, bug spray, sunscreen, 5-weight fly rod & matching reel, fly line, leader & tippet. Although your trip leaders will have some flies to loan.
